A Missional Reading of the Lord's Prayer

The Lord's Prayer is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples, when they asked him how they should pray.

Most Christians know the prayer by eye in their own linguistic communication, and it is used today by every Christian tradition, though there are sometimes small variations in the diction. Information technology has a place in every Anglican act of worship, and forms a pattern for prayer for Christians:

  • Nosotros anoint God and pray for our world, our communities and our lives to exist shaped by God's volition;
  • We pray for daily needs to exist met,
  • For forgiveness for wrongdoings, strength to resist temptation and protection from danger.

In that location are two versions unremarkably used in the Church of England – in Contemporary and Traditional Language:

Gimmicky

hallowed exist your proper name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth every bit in heaven.
Give united states of america today our daily staff of life.
Forgive the states our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Pb united states of america not into temptation
but evangelize u.s.a. from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for always.
Amen.

Traditional

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy volition exist done;
on earth as information technology is in heaven.
Requite the states this solar day our daily staff of life.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And atomic number 82 u.s.a. not into temptation;

For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,

Origins

The text is found in ii slightly different versions in the New Attestation – Matthew half-dozen.9–13 and Luke 11.1–4

The passage from Luke

The prayer as nosotros use information technology today is a version that was adapted past the early Christian communities from the ii Gospel texts, and it was taught in this course to new converts.

The final sentence, giving glory to God, is chosen the doxology. Information technology is non part of the New Attestation text, but was added very early on. The Lord'southward Prayer is occasionally said without information technology.

God is approachable. Prayer is something anyone can do. You don't take to utilize complicated words or flowery linguistic communication. God isn't swayed by arguments or by length or by skill in prayer.

At the centre of our prayers will exist words that Jesus himself taught usa. Information technology is simple enough to exist memorised by small children and notwithstanding profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer.
